In 2002 I began painting with acrylics on rough board and continued
to work with wood and mixed media, or more accurately: with hardware...
As a commercial illustrator mostly using computer, I had done few paintings. Essentially they were
an application of vector graphics to canvas. I didn’t feel like I was painting.
I wanted to work quickly with an immediacy and in general enjoy the process. Painting on weathered plywood board helped with the eternal issue of being too tight. Not only did it loosen up my brushstroke, but random texture of the wood adds dimension to the surface and I find it a great resource.
Endless cutting of boards and making frames led me to creating in wood in a mixed media and assemblage kinda' genre. Currently I am going deeper in the wood with sanding and carving, which would almost suggest sculpture...
